Health and Safety and Risk Assessments

"Certain duties under Health and Safety laws are of an absolute or strict nature. These duties are qualified by the terms 'shall' or 'must', such as the absolute duty on employers under the management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations to undertake a suitable and sufficient risk assessment."(Jeremy Stranks 2007: 3/94)
Preventing accidents and ill health should therefore be the main priority for everyone at work.

A risk assessment is used to identify sensible measures to control the risks in your workplace.

- Firstly you need to identify the hazards and who maybe harmed by them

- Then you need to decide on precautions to prevent these risks from happening

- Finally you will need to record your findings and review your assessment

HOWEVER if the risk could lead to a high probability of danger then the activity should not go ahead.

Sound

"When a large gathering is to be addressed, sound needs to be amplified and transmitted through loud speakers so that the people at distance from rostrum may receive sound of adequate intensity for comfortable listening. This system consisting of microphones an amplifier and loud speakers is called a public access system" (R G Gupta 2010; 207/284).

Therefore to create this sound you need to set the system up:

- Carefully lift speaker and place on top of tri stand

- Plug the microphone into the mixing desk before plugging the microphone lead into the speaker

- REMEMBER to turn on the mixing desk and then the speakers to prevent the speakers from blowing

Rigging and Manual Handling

Under the Provision and use of work equipment 1998 rigging for events should only be done by companies who know what they are doing as otherwise accidents could occur. For example if the rigging measurements or weight is over the said amount, the rig could end up falling down causing potential injury or death to others below.

-When working on rigging you need health and safety measures. This includes having protective devices and controls.

-When securing equipment ensure you fasten it tightly adding a safety hook.

-Using rope or wire is advisable when lifting equipment to people at a height.

-Never rush when transferring equipment.

Manual Handling
(MHOR 1992), is defined as "any transportation or supporting of load by hand or bodily force". This load can be an object, person or animal.

More than a third of all reportable injuries of over three days involve manual handling, which is why it's such a major influence on the workplace.

"Most of us will build our manual handling injuries everyday throughout our lives and that to keep us active and free of back problems we must apply the best manual handling principles to every manual handling activity"(Lee Marsh 2007; 11/86)

- If load is too heavy use a handling aid.
- You need to ensure when lifting the load that you stand close bending the knees to pick up slowly.
- Grasp load firmly and close to the body avoiding twisting.

Working at Height

Working at height means working above ground/floor level. This will involve using a range of access equipment.

(Fig 1) Make sure your clipped in with safety hook if using a ZAP ladder

Regulations such as the Health and Safety at work act 1974 , Management regulations ,PUWER and LOLER have all been put in place so the person is less at risk of falling a distance or having an accident which could cause personal injury.

More than a million British Businesses and ten million workers are estimated to carry out jobs involving some form of work at height every year. With falls being the biggest cause of death and serious injury at work it is important that we abide by these regulations.

When working at height:

- Make sure that equipment is secured and erected at the correct angle.

- The equipment should be positioned close to work to avoid over reaching, which could lead to the equipment rocking or falling.

- When climbing up and down the equipment you need to be facing towards the rungs using 3 points of contact (2 hands one foot or 2 feet 1 hand).
